An emergency home-cleaning checklist for unexpected guests

Use this emergency cleaning checklist to get guest-ready fast by prioritising the entrance, bathroom, seating, dishes, smells, and visible surfaces.

10 June 2025·2 min read·Tidywell Team

An unexpected visit can make every unfinished task feel equally urgent. It is not. Guests need a safe route, somewhere to sit, and a usable bathroom.

First 10 minutes

Clear the entrance and route to the main room. Remove rubbish and take dishes to one washing area. Clear enough seating for the number of guests expected.

Do not leave the room to put away every stray item. Use one basket for objects that belong elsewhere.

Next 10 minutes

Reset the bathroom guests will use:

  • clean the toilet seat, rim, and visible exterior;
  • wipe the sink and tap;
  • replace the hand towel;
  • check soap and toilet paper;
  • empty the bin if needed.

Final 10 minutes

Ventilate safely, deal with strong smells, and clean the most visible floor route or surface. Put away cleaning products. Close doors on rooms that are outside the visit.

If another household member is available, divide by zones rather than both wandering through the same list. Tidywell's live sprint can keep the short session visible.

After the guests leave

Empty the holding basket within a day or add a scheduled reset. Otherwise the emergency method creates tomorrow's doom pile.

For a routine that reduces future emergency cleans, start with the 10-minute cleaning reset.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What should I clean first before guests arrive?
Start with the entrance, guest bathroom, clear seating, dishes, rubbish, and any strong smells. Ignore rooms guests will not use.
How can I make my house look cleaner in 20 minutes?
Clear horizontal surfaces, contain unrelated items in a labelled basket, reset the bathroom, remove rubbish, and clean one visible floor route.
Where should I put clutter before guests arrive?
Use one labelled holding basket and schedule a time to empty it. Do not create several hidden piles you will forget.
