A room-by-room move-out cleaning checklist for moving day
Use a room-by-room move-out cleaning checklist with a sensible order, shared ownership, final photos and a clear boundary around tenancy requirements.
Moving creates two different workloads: getting possessions out and leaving the property to the required standard. Mixing them into one task called "move house" makes both harder.
Start with the required standard
Before cleaning, collect:
- The tenancy or sale agreement.
- Check-in inventory or condition report.
- Landlord, agent or buyer instructions.
- Appliance manuals left with the property.
- Rules about keys, bins, meters and access.
Requirements vary. Generic checklists cannot interpret your contract or local law. Seek appropriate advice when the wording or deposit implications are unclear.
Use a room sequence
| Area | First pass | Final pass |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen | Empty cupboards and appliances according to instructions | Surfaces, sink, floor and required appliance checks |
| Bathroom | Remove products and textiles | Fixtures, mirror, storage and floor |
| Bedrooms | Empty wardrobes and drawers | Surfaces, fittings and floor |
| Living areas | Remove possessions and wall-safe items | Surfaces, approved repairs and floor |
| Hall and entrance | Keep route usable during moving | Final floor, keys and exit check |
Follow product labels and surface instructions. Use qualified help for unsafe access, specialist cleaning, damage, gas, electrical or structural work.
Split packing from cleaning
Tidywell should hold household cleaning and room completion. Sprout can hold:
- Book van.
- Change address.
- Transfer utilities.
- Return equipment.
- Review insurance.
- Send documents.
The Sprout life-admin project guide can break those wider commitments into steps.
| Feature | Packing list | Tidywell | Sprout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Possessions | Boxes and destinations | Room clearing tasks | Bookings and decisions |
| Cleaning | Not the main purpose | Room-by-room ownership | Only personal actions |
| Admin | Limited | Household status | Contracts and address changes |
Run short room sprints
Do not start a three-hour sprint after a full moving day. Use 15 or 25 minutes for one room:
- Choose the room.
- Assign remaining tasks.
- Start a Live Sprint.
- Stop when the timer ends.
- Inspect before marking the room complete.
The sprint creates a shared finish line without pretending the whole move will be completed in one burst.
Use photos proportionately
Where an inventory, agent or household agreement requires evidence, take clear final photos after belongings and cleaning supplies leave the frame. Store and share them through the agreed process.
Do not use approval photos to monitor adults by default. Tidywell's photos-and-privacy guide explains its in-app workflow.
A worked final forty-eight hours
Two adults are leaving a two-bedroom flat.
Forty-eight hours before: one person checks the agreement, inventory and key instructions. The other clears the kitchen cupboards and confirms what travels in the final box.
Twenty-four hours before: each person owns one bedroom. Shared spaces are divided by result: bathroom baseline, kitchen appliances according to instructions, living-room surfaces and waste.
After furniture leaves: the household runs a twenty-five-minute Live Sprint for newly accessible areas, then stops for food and rest.
Final morning: one person completes the floor route from bedrooms towards the entrance. The other checks rooms against the inventory and handles required records. Both confirm keys, meters and access steps together.
The structure prevents one person becoming the only inspector while the other completes visible cleaning.
Keep the new home separate
Do not copy every move-out task into the new property. Create a fresh household with the rooms and recurrence that actually apply. A rented flat, shared house and family home will have different upkeep.
Carry forward only useful task wording and lessons. Old property requirements, photos and contacts should not remain in the active new-home list without a reason.
Avoid the final-day supply trap
Keep a small, clearly labelled cleaning kit available until the last pass, but do not leave dangerous products loose in an empty property. Check that each product is appropriate for the surface and can travel or be disposed of according to its label and local rules.
Pack chargers, lights, step-free tools, bin bags and any required keys deliberately. A completed room can become blocked again when the only cloth, vacuum attachment or access fob has already left in the moving van.
Close the list
Before leaving:
- Check every room is marked accurately.
- Review bins and any collection instructions.
- Complete keys, meters and access steps.
- Keep required records.
- Remove Tidywell tasks that should not recur in the new home.
Frequently asked questions
What order should I follow for move-out cleaning?
Start by checking the agreement and removing belongings, then clean high and inside areas before surfaces and floors. Finish with a room-by-room inspection and required key or meter steps.
Should I clean before or after moving furniture?
Do ordinary clearing first, then clean the newly accessible areas after furniture moves. Leave final floors and entry routes until late so they are not immediately marked again.
Can Tidywell help a household share a move-out clean?
Yes. Create one-off tasks by room, assign ownership, run a Live Sprint and use optional photos where everyone has agreed they are useful.
